The Response of Growth Hormone and Cortisol to Clonidine Administration in Deprossed Patients

Abstract
|
|
|
Clonidine in an a2-adrenergic receptor agonist and may serve as a useful neuronedocrine probe for examining receptor dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the state of a2-adrenoreceptor dysfunction by means of growth hormone and
cortisol response after intravenous clonidine administration in depressed patients.
The subjects consisted of 16 depressed patients and 12 healthy control subjects.
@ES The results were as follow.
@EN 1. Serum growth hormone levels for baseline and at 15, 30, 45 minutes after the clonidine infusion in depressed patients were 1.10*0.15 ng/ml, 3.87*0.80 ng/ml, 7.34*1.49 ng/ml and 4.74*1.06 ng/ml and those in controls were 1.11*0.20 ng/ml,
28.37*3.63 ng/ml, and 13.37*2.44 ng/ml respectively. In comparison,growth hormone levels after clonidin infusion in patient group were significantly lower than the controls at 15(P<0.001), 30(P<0.001), and 45 minutes(P<0.01).
2. Serum cortisol levels for bascline and at 15, 30, 45 minutes after the clonidine infusion in depressed patients were 12.23*1.40 ng/ml, 11.76*1.50 ng/ml, 10.61*1.58 ng/ml and 9.26*1.39 ng/ml and those in controls were 9.42*0.77 ng/ml,
7.79*0.50
ng/ml, 6.73*0.42 ng/ml and 5.78*0.38 ng/ml respectively. The vaseline cortisol levels showed no significant difference between groups but tended to be slightly higher in the depressed patients(P<0.1).
3. Serum cortisol levels both in the depressed patients and controls, at 15, 30, 45 minutes after the clonidine infusion were attenuated as compared to baseline levels, and the mean decrement of cortisol after the clonidine infusion showed no
significant difference between groups.
These results suggest that the sensitivity of a2-adrenergic receptor may be reduced in depressed patients.
